Judge a book by its cover

I have gotten attracted to colorful things and objects which I ended up buying which was neither a need nor necessity. Let me tell you a story.

When I go out shopping once in 4 months, I bring all eatables, snacks, groceries, and toiletries. Normal people bring their regular soap. I tend to get tempted to buy different soaps, body wash, and body scrubber. Let me only tell you how I select a soap.

  1. Shape of the soap
  2. Look and feel of the soap
  3. Color of the soap
  4. Design of the soap cover
  5. Fragrance
  6. Sometimes I go by review too

Any generic soap gives lather, posses fragrance, cleans dirt. Still, we end up buying very specific products. We get influenced by the factors mentioned above and marketing as well.

This design caught my attention. I was excited because, I could try different colored soaps every month. The color of the soap representation looked refreshing hence I made the purchase. This is how the soap looked inside the carton box

Isn’t the design cool and tempts you to use it?

I did not get convinced to use Medimix soap until they came up with attracting transparent gel soap. This explains how a product is chosen by the user.

Why is designing play such an important role in sales?

The colors play with our minds. Bright colors attract the customer just the way an insect is attracted to light. Designing need not be colorful always. The design has to represent the brand, their audience, and the product. For example, It does not make much sense to be as colorful as this if we are representing a product like property or real-estate. This product demands simplicity, elegance, and profoundness.

Aspects that count in making better design

  1. Color selection
  2. Design, graphics, image and text placements
  3. Information representation.
  4. Choosing the right text.

As I have mentioned in my previous blogs as well, For any product to find its place in the market requires Design, Best in class user experience, value for the product, engineering, product placement, and marketing.

Every product is different. The target customer segment is different. Hence the design aspects change according to the needs of the customer segment. A banking website cannot use floral background. This might not bring in the seriousness that the product demands. Likewise a wedding company cannot have serious and strict design.

Once the design is taken care of, next comes the experience of using the product. The product needs to be technical glitch-free, smooth as butter, information given upfront, Setting the focal point right etc. If a customer cannot proceed after clicking a certain button or the link is broken, The experience is lost. It will affect the customer conversion rate.

Let us look at the soap example. I selected the product based on its design and look. Now comes the experience. After I use the product, If I face any skin issues like pimple, rashes after using the soap, then I as a user will not use the product again. Marketing will not help much in this case.

To conclude, First look matters. design and experience play a vital role. Love at first sight happens through looks. So get your product designs right
